Work Experience Student

Peering into PIER

Hello! My name is Caleb and I am a year 10 student of Frankston High School. Unlike most of my peers, my favourite subjects are maths, science and sport. A family member introduced me to the world of marketing and I took a keen interest in the subject. I was lucky enough to be accepted to do work experience with PIER Marketing, a local agency located in Mornington. With little knowledge of what is involved in marketing, I was eager get some experience from the team and get a feel for what it is like being in the industry.

My first day at PIER Marketing! I have learned a lot of great skills and insight into what it’s like working in this company. I was introduced to some projects the team are currently working on and was presented with tasks to assist on these. I learned that applying interests and topics that go hand-in-hand with the subject you’re trying to promote helps to boost the product’s reputation, ultimately increasing reach. I also learnt there are many types of marketing platforms such as social media, banners, signs and many more things that catch the eye of the target audience.

On this day I felt more confident in what I was doing and had the opportunity to put the skills I had learned yesterday into practice. I attended a couple of meetings, particularly regarding business development, social media and event planning. They gave me a great insight into how to approach tasks and the different ways of thinking and perspectives involved in creating something great. I spent the remainder of the day on a variety of tasks, including finding content for Facebook posts that would resonate with different target audiences, sourcing leads and the best ways to approach each. Furthermore, I learnt that by undertaking competitor analysis we can see the opportunities within the landscape. This valuable information can then be incorporated to the business we’re trying to grow.

I found this day to be the most fascinating day of the week, sorting through businesses to approach with creative ideas, research for possible Facebook posts and attending a printing supplier excursion which I found very interesting. I learned how mass printing and production is done for businesses, colour matching techniques and the price variations for each process. I feel I have a good understanding on how to explain the printing process to somebody which I would not have been able to do before.

A continuation of the tasks I was working on Wednesday filled my day. I also attended a client meeting which explored the design element of marketing. We worked with the client to make amendments to a logo design. I learnt how design elements such as colours and lines can all be used to strengthen a brand’s personality. This gave me good insight into other aspects of marketing and what to look out for when I’m older (in my future marketing career)!

This was my final day of PIER marketing and I enjoyed it as much as when I first walked in the doors. Combining the skills over the week, I worked on several tasks including web research for a campaign, blogs for Facebook and photo/imagery examples. What I found the most interesting thing on this day was the research aspect - seeing how much time goes into all these campaigns that advertising and marketing companies work on.

In conclusion, my week at PIER Marketing has been excellent. Everybody in the office is bubbly and happy which makes the work environment very enjoyable. I feel I have learned all I need to know about the industry and it would be a great career to pursue. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!
